Meet Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) founded by Ilya Sutskever, Chief Scientist and one of the co-founders of OpenAI, with a mission of developing the safety of AI and improving its capabilities with a focus on the superintelligent safe AI.
Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, has unveiled a new venture, more specifically, Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) has been launched. This comes only a month after Denny hopping off from Open AI, the company that he was working for before joining The Big Short. Sutskever and his co-founders, which include former Y Combinator partner Daniel Gross and ex-OpenAI engineer Daniel Levy, are keen on revolutionizing the area of AI with this new venture.
During his time at OpenAI, Sutskever was instrumental in furthering the organization’s goals in AI safety specifically in the context of superintelligent AI. His work jointly made with J. Leike pointed out that it is possible to use AI to potentially create threats and for that reason, AI needs to be controlled and limited. Sutskever and Leike also left Open AI after apparently disagreeing with the elders of OpenAI on the safety of Artificial intelligence. Leike has since joined Anthropic, an AI competitor.
Sietskever has established his new company with the name Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), focusing on the development of a safe superintelligence. In a recent tweet, SSI outlined its mission: SSI is our mission, our name, and everything that we are doing as a company because SSI is all we do. The people in our company, the investors, the business model – everyone is aligned to achieve SSI. We do safety and capabilities simultaneously as two sides of the same conceptual coin and one is only effective once the other is because safety and capabilities are technical solutions to be solved through a revolution in engineering and science.
SSI’s approach is unique. The identified goals include the company’s intent to progress the utilization of AI technologies swiftly and unerringly guarantee safety mechanisms are also progressing apace. Another benefit of this approach is the possibility of a secure growth of AI innovations and their broad implementation. SSI hopes to partially demarginalize its initiatives from short-term business effects in this manner, as it does not employ any management overhead apart from following its stated mission.
While OpenAI was initially established as an explicitly non-profit organization, SSI is intended to be fully profit-oriented, although this change of orientation is subject to its evolution. That is why the given structure is expected to attract a large amount of capital, driven by the immense focus on AI and the extensive experience of the SSI team. Daniel states that SSI won’t have difficulties in raising its capital. Behind this seemed to be strategic positions and talent procurement.
