Learn how Panasonic’s Silky Fine Mist cools while integrating clear electronic screens and changing Japan’s outdoor spaces.
Panasonic will launch the Silky Fine Mist which is a state-of-the-art technology to help keep people cool and yet present a visual sensation. It all started with an outdoor cooling system and then mist technology has grown to produce see-through huddle displays, the marriage of the two to provide comfort and art installations in public areas.
Panasonic created the Silky Fine Mist to tackle Japan’s scorching hot summer challenges. The system employs water pressure and compressed air to produce droplets with particle sizes of between six and ten microns. These particles are tiny, and they thus condition the air without dampening surfaces as other traditional systems do. This system was launched in 2019, and its usage has been expanded in stations and facilities throughout Japan to increase comfort during use.
In addition to cooling, Panasonic saw the marketing and advertising application of the mist technology it was developing for art pieces and digital media. When applied with projection mapping, the company uses mist to produce transparent displays and its cooling function. Fish swimming in mid-air is just an option of the artistic solutions made possible by this technology’s emergence. This mist display has been in use by Panasonic in various technology expos for instance, where it provides real live experience.
While both these features are good, the company’s Silky Fine Mist system is not very portable at all. The built model is quite big, can be three feet wide and tall, and weighs 420 pounds; the North American model’s power usage is 2.4 kilowatts. While not necessarily ‘portable’ per se it’s highly effective in permanent or semi-permanent applications and for mid to large functions.
Compared to the other transparent display systems, the Silky Fine Mist does not produce images of as high definition, but it gives a cooler and more personal feel. This mist-based projection is a new form of digital display, literally ‘a cut above’ going up in the air and transforming outdoor art pieces and digital billboards.
Part of Panasonic’s unique cool tech series, the Silky Fine Mist is a combination of body spray and a screen. In large public spaces, and paintings or sculptural forms, it provides a visually pleasing and rather invigorating answer. This innovative feature will enhance built environments in cities worldwide in the future.
